Glossary of Terms

IC (Integrative Complexity)
A way of measuring how well people can see issues from multiple perspectives and connect them into a more balanced understanding.


IC Method
A practical training approach that helps people strengthen their Integrative Complexity, making them more resilient to rigid or “black-and-white” thinking.


IC Coding 

Includes the process of analyzing written or spoken material to assess levels of Integrative Complexity. This can be supported by AI for efficiency. The results can indicates whether parties to an intergroup conflict will shift towards greater conflict and even violence, or move towards pro-social means of conflict resolution through cognitive flexibility and perspective-taking, which enable empathy and resilience. 


IC Course
A structured training program delivered through action learning, online sessions, or blended methods, designed to raise participants’ IC levels.


LMS (Learning Management System)
An online platform where trainees access IC course materials, films, quizzes, and certificates.


CVE / PVE (Countering / Preventing Violent Extremism)
Programs aimed at reducing polarization and building resilience against extremist or zero-sum thinking.


Action Learning
A group training method where participants work through real problems together, reflecting and applying IC tools in practice.


Facilitator
A trained person who delivers IC courses in their organization or community under the guidance of their organization’s leadership with the support of a Senior IC Consultant.


Senior IC Consultant
An expert who supports organizations through IC training, including course adaptation, observed practice, and feedback.


Polarization
A process where groups or individuals become more divided, rigid, and unable to recognize common ground.


Zero-Sum Thinking
A mindset where people see issues as “either/or,” believing one side must win and the other must lose, with no middle ground.


Resilience
The capacity to handle social, political, or personal conflict without slipping into rigid or extreme positions.
